Broward County teacher charged with DUI

A Broward County, Florida, teacher was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk after crashing her BMW into the rear of a dump truck on the Florida Turnpike in Hollywood, Florida. The accident involving the 26-year-old Davie woman and the the truck in question occurred a little south of the Miramar Parkway exit shortly after midnight on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017.

The responding Florida Highway Patrol officer describes how, in questioning the teacher at the scene, she maintained that she had only consumed a single alcoholic drink that night. Despite this, not only did the officer note a strong scent of alcohol on the teacher's breath, but she also allegedly exhibited other signs consistent with drunkedness as well including slurred speech, watery eyes and difficulty maintaining balance.

It is because of the manifestation of these different indicators that propelled the officer to ask the woman to participate in a field sobriety test. Although the teacher initially rejected the trooper's request citing a left leg injury, she eventually conceded on the grounds that she "wanted to prove" to him that "she was not drunk".

As the second grade Embassy Creek Elementary School teacher began the test, she removed her high heels, in what she alleged would allow her to have better balance. Despite this measure, she failed to heed officer instructions, ultimately causing her to fail the test.

After this failure, she was asked to consent to taking a Breathalyzer test, a request she denied. The report alleges that the elementary school teacher was checked out by medical staff at Plantation General Hospital before ultimately being booked at the Broward County Jail.

As of press time, Broward County school officials said the woman's job, which she had held since 2014, had not been affected by her arrest. School district policy requires self-reporting of criminal matters and bases disciplinary action measures on a thorough review of relevant documentation.

Unfortunately, incidents like this involving teachers and other school personnel happen in the state of Florida are not all that uncommon. If you're an educator that has been involved in an incident not all that different from this, a Florida educational law attorney can provide advice and guidance in your legal matter.
